Catherine Walsh
Catherine Walsh (b. 1992, California) is a multidisciplinary artist working across photography, sculpture, fashion and dance. Raised in rural Ireland, she trained in ballet, studying in London and touring the UK before moving to New York in 2016 to pursue a professional dance career.
Her artwork stems from a shift away from the perfectionism of classical dance, seeking moments that resist polish: the pause before a movement, the slight collapse after effort, the unconscious gesture when the camera is forgotten. Working with photography and sculpture, Walsh explores personal history, transition and everyday life, often incorporating found and discarded materials into her practice. Her textile sculptures, made from discarded clothing and fabric, transforming overlooked materials into new forms, exploring ideas of waste, reconstruction and material memory.
Based in Manchester, she makes artwork, takes photographs and runs Staunch, her reworked fashion label. Her work has been exhibited at Scope Miami, Selina Hotel Chelsea, Hydra School Projects Greece, VFA Gallery Soho, Not For Them Gallery Brooklyn, Gallery 198 Brooklyn and Tsundoku Art Book Fair, Ireland.
